At breakfast time, 8.30, a dense fog hangs around the house, but this dissipates quickly. Tufts of cloud remain at low level, such as the Rhone valley. We try to do the laundry, but the dryer is not working. The proprietor comes round after lunch to have a look, so we basically can't go anywhere today. As a result, we can take it easy after yesterday's exertions on the Foggenhorn. As I walked down to buy some bread, the fog lifted. The Mischabel massif, to the southwest, can be made out fairly clearly, but the Monte Leone (to the southeast) is in cloud. We found a drying rack somewhere and the sun will dry things pretty fast. The proprietor turns up at 1 o'clock, to find that the tumble dryer really is not working. He takes our wet laundry away to dry it in his own home. I manage to make considerable headway in Tom Jones (that novel by Henry Fielding). By mid afternoon, the sun disappears behind cloud and more cloud wafts down from Belalp. At 5pm, the laundry returns, dry and ironed! Unfortunately, the electric has gone off altogether, and the proprietor returns for a third time, as all the fuses had blown due to the faulty tumble dryer. Rain started just after all had been sorted out.
