Another official feast day, so shops are only open for a few hours today. As we head out for the Aussichtspunkt [Viewpoint] on the Blindberg [berg =mountain], we come across a trailer full of goats and their attendant herdess. The Viewpoint offers a handsome view down to Geimen and Brig. Cloud levels are low today, with the intermediate stop on the cable car up to Belalp only just peeping below the cloud. There is some rain, but not much. We retrace our steps to the village centre of Blatten, and proceed down a steep track that plunges into the Blindtal [tal = valley]. At the bottom, we end up at the Vita Parcours, which offers the opportunity to improve your physical condition. Anyone that negotiated that track does not need any further enhancement to their physical prowess! The walking trail issues onto the main road at Geimen, just up from the church. Another trail heads north, out of the village, towards Blatten. It is a steep affair, very steep for us untutored walkers. Geimen sits just below 1,100 metres; Blatten is at 1,323. Rising more than 200 metres over 1 mile means you’re going up at a rate of 1 in 8. The ascent leads along the bank of the Kelchbach [bach = beck], and gets improved with some intermittent falls of rain. Almost on our knees we return to the Tourist Office by 1pm. We take it easy for the rest of the day, planning a walk to Brig (4 miles) the next morning. I need another adapter for my battery charger. The news mentions that the Simplon Tunnel (linking Brig to Domodossola in Italy) remains closed following a serious trainfire last Thursday. This destroyed a goods train; nobody was hurt but this busy transit link will remain closed for some time.
